Petzl Irvis Hybrid Review
The Irvis Hybrid solves the ski tourer's real problem, which is not grip but willingness. A crampon you actually carry gets used; one you leave at home because it is heavy and awkward does nothing. At ~540 g a pair and folding down to something that fits in a jacket pocket, this one comes along.
The design is a straight swap of material where it counts: the steel front section from the standard Irvis is kept intact, the heel section is aluminum, and the steel linking bar is replaced with Petzl's CORD-TEC Dyneema cord. The steel stays where you bite, the weight comes out where you mostly just stand.
It is the crampon we recommend to more ski mountaineers than any other, with one caveat that deserves a full section: the cord is a wear item.

Where the hybrid layout makes sense
Load through a crampon is not evenly distributed. The front section takes the impact of kicking steps, the leverage of front-pointing and almost all of the contact with rock, ice and the edge of a bootpack. The heel section mostly holds the crampon on the boot and carries body weight straight down onto snow. Steel is worth its weight in the first job and largely wasted in the second.
In use that means the Hybrid bites exactly like the steel Irvis on the terrain that matters. Same front points, same secondary geometry, same behaviour on firm névé and short ice steps. What you feel underfoot on a booter up a spring couloir is a steel crampon, because the part touching the couloir is steel.
Where you notice the alloy is on rock and on descent. Aluminum heel points round off faster than steel on a rocky col crossing, and once rounded they hold less on hard, refrozen afternoon snow. That is a slow degradation over seasons rather than a failure, but it is real, and it is the reason we would not pick the Hybrid as a general summer glacier crampon over the all-steel version.
The CORD-TEC cord, honestly
A Dyneema cord instead of a steel bar is why the crampon packs small: the two halves fold onto each other instead of being held apart by a rigid strip. It also removes a stiff plate from the sole, which some people prefer on soft-flexing ski boots and others read as a loss of lateral rigidity. On snow the difference is hard to detect; the boot provides the stiffness.
The honest caveats are these.
The cord abrades. It runs through contact points on both sections and it sees grit, ice and load cycles. Over a few hard seasons the sheath fuzzes at those contact points. That is normal wear and not a reason to retire it, but it means the cord needs looking at, unlike a steel bar you can ignore for a decade.
Your own points can cut it. The most common way a cord gets damaged is not on the mountain but in the pack — the crampon folded onto itself, points resting on the cord, then the pack compressed and carried for hours. Use a crampon bag or point protectors. This is the single most valuable habit for cord-linked crampons.
It is replaceable. Petzl sells replacement cord for the CORD-TEC system, which changes the failure conversation completely: a worn cord is a consumable, not a dead crampon. Fitting one is fiddly with cold hands, so do it at home, not at a hut.
Sizing is slower. Adjusting the length means working the cord, not clicking a bar into a hole. Set it once for your ski boots and leave it. If you swap between ski boots and mountaineering boots regularly, a bar-linked crampon is less annoying.
Inspect the cord at both contact points before each season and after any trip where the crampons rode loose in a pack. Fuzzed sheath is acceptable; visible core, a cut, or a section that has gone stiff and glazed means replace the cord.
Bindings and boot fit
The Hybrid is sold with the Leverlock Universel binding. The heel lever needs a heel welt, so this is a B2/B3 crampon — there is no strap-on version of the Hybrid the way there is for the standard Irvis. The toe comes with a flexible cradle and can also run a wire bail, so it covers both semi-automatic and fully automatic fitting from one purchase.
Almost all ski touring boots have a compatible heel, but "almost" is doing work in that sentence. Rockered soles, tech-fitting shells and unusually short heel welts all exist. Fit the crampon to the actual boot at home, twist it hard by hand and check that the heel lever seats without needing brute force. Details on welts and ratings: crampon and boot compatibility.
Set front-point projection so the points stand roughly 1.5–2 cm proud of the toe. With ski boots, check that the heel lever does not interfere with a walk-mode cuff release, because discovering that at the base of a couloir is a bad time.
A light crampon in a couloir does not make the couloir less serious. Steep firm snow requires an ice axe you can self-arrest with, honest assessment of what is below you, and the judgment to turn around. Get instruction before committing to ground where a slip runs.
On the mountain: what it does well and where it stops
Best case: a spring ski tour where the last 200 m to a col is bulletproof morning snow, you swap skis for crampons for twenty minutes and then put them away. The Hybrid is close to perfect there. It also handles alpine ridge days, glacier approaches on a ski-mountaineering objective, and the kind of moderate booter that appears on volcano descents.
The ceiling is the same as the standard Irvis: ten points and no secondary points means front-pointing is tiring and imprecise. Short steep steps are fine. Sustained steep ice is not what this crampon is for, and the alloy heels give you another reason not to try. If your season contains real ice pitches, look at the 12-point and technical crampons in best crampons instead.
ANTISNOW plates are fitted front and rear, and they matter here more than on most crampons — spring snow is the Hybrid's natural habitat and it is the snow that balls up worst. Tap the frame with the axe shaft regularly when snow starts sticking.

Who should buy the Irvis Hybrid
Buy it if you ski tour with welted boots and want one crampon that covers spring couloirs, cols and summit ridges without dominating your pack. Buy it if you have previously left crampons at home because of weight and later wished you had not. Buy it if you want most of the security of steel with most of the weight saving of aluminum, and you accept a consumable cord as the price. Who should not buy it
Skimo racers and pure snow-only users. If every gram counts and your crampon will only ever touch snow on a marked skimo course or a soft spring slope, the ~330 g Leopard saves another 200 g. Understand that you are trading away steel entirely — see aluminum vs steel crampons before making that trade.
Summer glacier trekkers and general mountaineers. If the crampon is on your feet for hours across moraine, rock bands and mixed ground, buy the all-steel Irvis. It costs less, tolerates abuse better and you will barely notice the extra 180 g when it is not living in your pack.
Anyone whose boots have no heel welt. There is no strap-on Hybrid. Boots without welts need a Flexlock-style crampon, and boots with genuinely flexible soles need microspikes rather than crampons of any kind.

Buy a crampon bag or point protectors at the same time. It is the cheapest way to protect the cord, and the damage it prevents happens in your pack, not on the mountain.
FAQ
How long does the CORD-TEC cord last?
It depends far more on how you store and carry the crampons than on how much you use them. Protected from its own points, a cord runs for many seasons with nothing worse than a fuzzed sheath. Carried loose with points pressing on it, it can be damaged in a single trip. Inspect it each season and replace it if you see core fibres, a cut or a glazed stiff section.
Is the Irvis Hybrid safe on hard water ice?
For short steps in balance, the steel front points bite well. For anything sustained or vertical, no — a 10-point crampon without secondary points is the wrong design regardless of material, and the alloy heels add nothing on ice.
Does the cord make the crampon less stable than a bar?
On snow, not detectably. The stiffness under your foot comes from the boot, not the linking system. On sustained front-pointing you might prefer a bar, but that is not terrain this crampon belongs on anyway.
Will it fit tech-fitting ski touring boots?
Usually, if the boot has a proper heel welt. Rockered and unusually shaped soles are the exception. Test the fit at home, and check the heel lever does not foul the walk-mode mechanism.
