The Best Crampons of 2026

There is no single "best crampon" — there is a best crampon for your boots and your terrain. A 12-point steel workhorse is wrong for a fast ski tour, and an aggressive ice crampon is miserable on a long glacier slog. Below are the six models we recommend most often, each the strongest choice in its category, followed by how we decide.

A crampon is a metal frame of downward and forward-facing points that clips or straps to a rigid-soled boot so you can stand on ground that would otherwise slide out from under you: firm snow above roughly 30°, névé, glacier ice, water ice. Everything below is a variation on four questions — how many points, what shape they are, what metal they are made of, and how the frame attaches to a boot.

Two things follow, and both decide purchases more often than the ranking does. A crampon needs a boot stiff enough to hold it: grip a boot at toe and heel and try to fold it, and a mountaineering boot hinges only near the ball of the foot where an ordinary hiking boot folds through the arch. On a sole that folds, the frame flexes with every stride, the points lever out and the straps work loose.

And a large share of people shopping for crampons want traction on ground they walk across rather than the ability to stand on a slope. If your winter is packed trails, frozen fire roads and icy car parks, you are on the wrong page in the best possible way — skip to the sixth pick.

The Vasak is the crampon we point most people toward. Twelve conservative steel points give confident purchase on glacier, névé and moderate ice without snagging on rock or trousers the way aggressive front points do. ANTISNOW plates shed wet snow well, the linking bar adjusts without tools, and Petzl sells it in Flexlock (strap), and Leverlock (semi-auto/auto) versions, so it fits nearly any stiff boot.

What makes it the default is that nothing about it demands technique you have not learned yet. The ten downward points sit in a wide, even pattern, so your weight lands on several at once instead of teetering on two, and the front points do not sit so proud that flat-footing feels like standing on a diving board. Its honest ceiling is short ice steps to roughly 60°, climbed in balance. Above that you are working harder than the crampon is.

2. Grivel G12 — best value

Grivel invented the modern 12-point crampon, and the hot-forged G12 is its direct descendant. It is slightly heavier and cruder than the Vasak but legendarily durable — guides keep rental fleets of these for a reason. If it's your first mountaineering crampon and budget matters, buy the G12 with the New-Matic (semi-auto) binding and never think about it again.

Hot forging is the reason it lasts. Forged points keep their tip density as they wear, so they blunt slowly and file back to shape rather than thinning into fragile splinters, and the frames simply do not fail in normal use. Three bindings are sold — New-Classic strap-on, New-Matic semi-automatic, Cramp-O-Matic automatic — covering B1 through B3 boots from the same forged frame. Straps and Antibott plates are the wear items, and both are stocked in every valley town that sells climbing gear.

The Sabretooth splits the difference between a walking crampon and an ice crampon: horizontal front points that still climb moderate ice well, stainless steel that shrugs off rust, and a stable platform for long approaches. It's the pick if your "mountaineering" regularly includes 50–60° ice steps.

Two versions are sold and the choice is made by your boots, not your ambition: Clip is semi-automatic and needs a heel welt, Pro is fully automatic and needs welts at both ends. Most buyers want the Clip. Stainless is the other quiet argument — crampons that get left in a damp pack after a wet route do not pit at the point tips, which matters more in maritime ranges than any spec sheet suggests. The steel front section is what separates it from full-alloy rivals: a bulge of hard ice at the top of a couloir or fifty metres of rocky col quietly ruins aluminum points and leaves these untouched. The limits are the ten points and the absence of secondary points, so short steep steps are fine and sustained front-pointing is not. It needs a heel welt — there is no strap-on Hybrid — and the Dyneema cord is the one component that wants looking at each season.

They catch on the ice below your placement and stop the heel dropping, which is what keeps a steep pillar from turning into a calf endurance test. How we choose

We rank crampons on five factors, in this order: security on the intended terrain (point geometry and bite), boot compatibility (a great crampon that doesn't fit your boots is a hazard), durability (forging quality, strap and bail hardware), snow shedding (anti-balling performance in warm snow), and weight. Price is a tiebreaker, never the lead — this is fall-protection equipment.

Front-point geometry. Flat horizontal points displace a lot of material per kick, which makes them stable in snow and slow on hard ice. T-section points penetrate with one kick while a horizontal flange stops the boot rotating on the placement. Vertical and mono points slice into cold, brittle ice cleanly and feel twitchy on anything softer. Match the shape to the surface you meet most often, not the one you aspire to.

Steel type and durability. Hot-forged carbon steel holds its edge longest and files back well, but rusts if stored damp. Stainless tolerates neglect and maritime air and dulls slightly faster on rock. Aluminum grips firm snow as well as either and fails on ice and rock — a specialist's second pair, never a first one.

Anti-balling plates. Wet snow packing into a solid lump under the frame turns a crampon into a smooth platform, and it is a leading cause of unexpected slips on warm afternoons. Every steel model here ships with plates front and rear. Leave them on, tap the frame with the axe shaft when the boot feels like it is rising, and replace cracked plates before a season rather than during one.

Binding versions offered. The fitting matters more than the model name. Strap-on (C1) suits stiff boots with no welts, semi-automatic (C2) needs a heel welt, automatic (C3) needs welts at toe and heel. A crampon sold in all three fittings is a safer purchase than a slightly better one sold only in the fitting your boots lack — and a toe bail on a boot with no toe welt has nothing to seat against.

Weight against security. Weight matters through behaviour rather than physics: gear left in the car protects nobody, which is the whole argument for hybrid and aluminum crampons on ski days. It is a poor argument for a first pair, which has to cope with the surface you did not plan for.

Boot compatibility, checked on the boots you own. Not the boots you intend to buy, and not what a listing claims. Fit the crampon at home in daylight: front points projecting roughly 1.5–2 cm ahead of the toe, no rocking when you twist the boot in the frame, heel lever needing a firm push rather than one finger.

If you only ever own one pair

Most people who buy crampons buy one pair and keep it for a decade, which makes the one-pair question more useful than the ranking. The answer is a steel 12-point with horizontal front points, anti-balling plates fitted, and the binding version your current boots accept — the Vasak if the budget allows, the G12 if it does not.

The reasoning is about range rather than excellence. A steel 12-point is never the best tool for a specific day. It is heavier than you want on a ski tour and slower than you want on a vertical pitch. But it is competent on every surface a boot goes on: glacier, névé, breakable crust, frozen turf, rocky mixed ground and short ice steps. Specialised crampons buy performance in one direction by giving up margin in another, and margin is what a single pair is for.

Buy the specialist second, once your days have a pattern. Neither a hybrid nor a modular ice crampon makes the 12-point redundant, which is why the 12-point is the one to own first.

Who should not buy anything on this page

Anyone whose boots fold. This is a fit rule, not a preference. On a soft sole the frame flexes, points lever out and straps loosen, and the assembly becomes a trip hazard on ground it was never meant for. Buy stiffer boots first, or accept that your terrain is trail terrain.

Winter trail walkers. Icy fire roads, frozen boot-pack in the trees and rolling winter trails below roughly 25° are ground you walk across, not ground you stand on. Crampons buy traction, not safety. Above roughly 30° a slip becomes a slide within a metre, and stopping one takes an ice axe and a self-arrest you have practised on real ground. Any slope steep enough to justify the hardware on this page is steep enough to justify the axe and, for most people, a day with an instructor. Do I need an ice axe as well?

On anything steep enough to need crampons, yes. Crampons stop your feet sliding; an axe is how you stop once a slide has started, and the two are a single system rather than alternatives. An axe you have never used in anger is decoration — practise self-arrest on a safe slope with a clean runout, ideally under instruction, before you rely on it.
