Black Diamond Sabretooth Review

The Sabretooth is the crampon you buy when your season is mountaineering but the mountaineering keeps running into ice. It is a stainless 12-point with horizontal front points, roughly 940 g a pair, stiff enough to hold an edge on a 60° runnel and relaxed enough to walk four hours of glacier without punishing your calves. It needs a boot with at least a heel welt, so it is not a first crampon for someone in flexible hiking boots.

Binding versions: Clip and Pro

Black Diamond's naming is simple once you know the decoder. Clip is semi-automatic: a plastic toe cradle held by a strap, plus a heel lever that snaps into the heel welt. It needs a boot with a heel welt (B2 or B3). Pro is fully automatic: a wire toe bail plus the heel lever, so the boot needs a toe welt as well as a heel welt (B3). There is no strap-on Sabretooth; if your boots have no welts at all, that decision is already made for you further down this page.

Most buyers want the Clip. It fits the widest range of boots, weighs slightly less, and on anything short of sustained vertical ice you will not feel the difference in security. Take the Pro if you own dedicated B3 shells and expect to front-point on steep ground regularly — the wire bail sits lower and transmits foot movement to the points with less slop. On snow and mixed alpine ground

The Sabretooth walks better than its ice ability suggests. The frame has enough torsional give to follow a boot rolling over broken rock, and the secondary points sit far enough back that flat-footing on a 40° snow slope feels planted rather than tippy. Point length is moderate — long enough to reach through a wind crust into firmer snow beneath, short enough that you are not stilting around on hard névé.

Anti-balling plates are fitted front and rear as standard, and they matter more than most first-time buyers expect. Spring snow at a few degrees above freezing packs into the frame within a dozen steps, and a balled-up crampon is effectively a smooth platform. The plates shed most of it; a tap on the boot with the axe shaft clears the rest. Never remove them to save weight.

On rock, the stainless points scratch and scuff rather than roll over, which is the practical advantage of the alloy Black Diamond uses. Mixed scrambling in crampons is hard on any point, but the Sabretooth tolerates a season of it without needing a rebuild.

On ice: what the front points actually do

The front points are horizontal, moderately aggressive, and slightly longer than a pure walking crampon's. On alpine ice up to around 60° they bite with one clean kick and hold without the vibration that makes shorter points feel untrustworthy. The dual secondary points sit close behind and take load as soon as you drop your heel, which is the geometry that keeps sustained front-pointing from becoming a calf endurance test.

Limits are worth stating plainly. Horizontal points are a compromise design: they displace more ice per placement than vertical points, so they can shatter brittle winter ice where a mono-point would slot cleanly. On vertical waterfall pitches the Sabretooth is workable but tiring, and precision on thin smears is not its strength. None of this makes steep ground safe by itself. Front-pointing above consequential runout requires ice axe competence, a reliable self-arrest reflex, and ideally formal instruction. A crampon that bites well simply removes one variable.

Stainless steel: the quiet selling point

Most crampons are chrome-moly or carbon steel with a coating. The coating wears off at the points first — exactly where the metal meets salt-laced maritime snow, wet glacier melt and the inside of a damp pack — and rust starts there. Black Diamond builds the Sabretooth from stainless, which changes the ownership experience in three ways.

It tolerates neglect. Coming off a wet route and leaving the crampons in the pack overnight is a mistake with carbon steel. With stainless it is a non-event. Surface discolouration can appear, but it does not become the flaking, pitting corrosion that eventually eats point tips.

It suits coastal and maritime ranges. Salt air in the Cascades, Scotland, Patagonia and the Alps in a wet spring is genuinely corrosive. Stainless is the sensible default there.

It sharpens differently. Stainless holds an edge well but is slightly less hard than the best hot-forged carbon steels, so it can dull marginally faster on rock. The trade is fair: a few extra minutes with a hand file per season against not having to fight rust for the life of the crampon. File by hand only — a bench grinder overheats the tip and destroys the temper.

Fit and adjustment

Length adjustment is tool-free: pull the linking bar detent and slide it to the size marking that puts the front points projecting roughly 1.5–2 cm ahead of the boot toe. Get that projection right before worrying about anything else, because too little projection means no bite and too much makes the crampon lever off the boot when you walk flat-footed.

The heel lever has a micro-adjust screw. Set it so the lever needs a firm push to close and stays closed under a hard sideways tug on the frame. If it closes with one finger, it is loose. Sizing across a broad boot range is good, but very small boots (below about a US men's 5) can run out of adjustment, and very large shells occasionally need the long linking bar Black Diamond sells separately.

Who should buy the Sabretooth

Buy it if you own B2 or B3 boots and want one crampon that does not force a compromise between walking and climbing. Buy it if you climb somewhere wet, where corrosion resistance is a durability feature rather than a marketing line.

Who should not buy it

If your boots have no heel welt. There is no strap-on Sabretooth. Flexible or welt-free boots need a C1 crampon — the BD Contact is the direct answer within the same brand.

Clip for B2 boots and for most B3 owners who want maximum flexibility across footwear. Pro for B3 shells when you front-point on steep ground often and want the most direct connection between boot and points.

Is stainless steel actually stronger?

Not stronger — more corrosion resistant. Strength is fine for alpine use, but the real benefit is that wet storage and maritime air do not pit the points. Expect to touch up the tips with a hand file slightly more often after rocky ground.

Will the Sabretooth fit my leather hiking boots?

Only if they have a moulded heel welt and a genuinely stiff sole. Most leather hiking boots have neither. Test the sole: if you can flex it noticeably by hand, no crampon belongs on it.

Do I still need an ice axe?

Yes. Crampons stop you slipping; an axe is how you stop after you slip. On any slope where a fall would run, carry an axe and know how to arrest with it before relying on either.
