Black Diamond Contact Review

The Contact is the simplest crampon Black Diamond makes: a stainless 12-point strap-on at roughly 800 g a pair, with no levers, no bails and nothing to adjust beyond the linking bar and the webbing. It exists for one job — walking on snow and moderate ice in boots that do not have welts — and within that job it is honest, cheap to live with and hard to get wrong.

The rating is not a criticism of the build. It reflects a narrow ceiling: the Contact is deliberately unambitious, and a large share of the people who search for it would be better served either by a stiffer crampon or by microspikes. Both of those cases are covered below, because getting this decision right matters more than the crampon itself.

What a strap-on actually means

Black Diamond's naming runs Strap, Clip and Pro. Strap is the C1 strap-on: plastic cradles front and back, held by webbing that routes around the boot and buckles on the outside of the ankle. Clip is semi-automatic (C2) and needs a heel welt. Pro is fully automatic (C3) and needs a toe welt too. The Contact is the Strap-focused model in the line, and that is the point of it: no welts required, so it fits the widest range of footwear.

Widest is not the same as universal. Strap-on bindings hold the crampon on by tension around the boot, and that tension is only useful if the sole underneath is stiff. On a stiff sole the crampon and boot move as one unit. On a bendy sole the boot flexes through the arch, the linking bar cannot follow, the frame works against the webbing and the crampon rotates, loosens or comes off. It usually happens on a traverse, which is the worst moment for it.

The fit question: will it work on your hiking boots?

This is the single reason most Contact purchases succeed or fail. Do the flex test before buying anything. Hold the boot by the toe and heel and try to bend the sole. A B1 mountaineering boot or a genuinely stiff backpacking boot will resist noticeably and flex only near the ball of the foot. A three-season hiking boot will fold. A trail shoe will fold in half.

If your boots fail the flex test, do not buy a crampon of any kind. A crampon that rotates on a soft boot is more dangerous than no traction at all, because you will commit to steeper ground trusting it. Read microspikes vs crampons before you spend anything.

Assuming the boots pass, fitting is straightforward. Set the linking bar so the front points project about 1.5–2 cm ahead of the toe, seat the boot fully into both cradles, then route the webbing so the strap pulls the toe cradle back against the boot rather than just cinching around it. Re-check the tension after ten minutes of walking; new webbing settles.

On the mountain

The Contact does what a well-shaped 12-point should on moderate ground. Twelve points give a broad platform for flat-footing, and on firm snow at 30–35° it is entirely secure. The frame's flexibility, which is a liability on ice, is an asset on a long approach: it moves with the boot and the walking feels close to normal. At around 800 g a pair it is also light enough that carrying it "just in case" on a summer glacier route is not a burden.

Front points are short and modestly angled. They are there to kick steps in snow and cross the occasional icy patch, not to climb. Front-pointing anything sustained on the Contact is unpleasant and, on hard ice, unreliable — the short points plus the flexible frame means the boot rocks over the tips instead of standing on them.

Stainless steel is the material choice, and it is a genuinely good one at this level. Entry crampons live in damp packs and get put away wet more often than technical crampons do, because their owners use them a handful of times a season. Stainless tolerates that. Points still need an occasional touch-up with a hand file after rocky ground, but rust will not be what retires this crampon.

Anti-balling plates are included. Given that the Contact's core terrain is spring and summer snow — precisely the wet, sticky conditions where snow packs under a frame — they are not optional. Leave them fitted.

Who should buy the Contact

Buy it if you have stiff boots without welts and your winter and summer plans are walking-based: glacier trekking on a rope team, hut approaches over old snow, standard volcano routes, easy alpine ridges, a guided introductory mountaineering course. Buy it if you need crampons a few times a season and would rather spend the difference on an axe and instruction. Buy it if you want a spare pair that will fit almost anyone in the group.

It also makes sense as a stepping stone. Plenty of people start on a Contact, discover they enjoy steeper ground, and move up to a welted boot and a proper alpine crampon a season or two later. Nothing is wasted; the Contact stays useful as the crampon you lend out or throw in the pack for a low-angle day.

Who should not buy it

If your boots are flexible. This is the big one. Standard hiking boots, approach shoes and trail runners cannot hold any crampon securely. If you have no ice axe or no training. Crampons stop your feet sliding; they do not stop a fall once it starts. Any snow slope steep enough to justify crampons is steep enough to justify an axe, a practised self-arrest and, ideally, a day of instruction. No crampon makes consequential terrain safe on its own.

FAQ

Can I use the Contact on regular hiking boots?

Only if the sole is genuinely stiff. Bend the boot by hand: if it folds through the arch, the crampon will loosen in use. Flexible boots need microspikes, not crampons.

Is 12 points overkill for glacier walking?

No. Twelve points spread load and give a wider stance than a 10-point; the front pair is simply not doing much on flat ground. The Contact's point count is not what limits it — the frame stiffness and point length are.

How long do the straps last?

Several seasons of normal use. Inspect the webbing near the buckle and where it passes through the cradles each autumn, and replace it at the first sign of fraying or stiffening. Straps are the cheapest part of the crampon and the one most likely to fail.

Contact or Serac for a first crampon?

Contact if your boots have no welts and your plans are walking-based. Serac if you have welted boots or expect to be on steeper snow and ice within a season or two — it walks nearly as well and handles far more.
