Microspikes vs Crampons
The difference is not price, weight or how serious you are. It is this: microspikes keep you upright on ground you are walking across. Crampons let you stand on ground you would otherwise slide down. Everything else follows from that.
Microspikes hang short steel points under a flexible sole on a chain. They have no front points, no rigid frame and no attachment to the boot other than a rubber harness stretched over it. Crampons are a steel frame bolted to a stiff boot with points that project forward past the toe, so you can kick into a slope and edge on hard snow and ice.
Buying the wrong one in either direction has consequences. Crampons on a rolling icy trail are heavy, awkward and need boots most hikers do not own. Microspikes on a steep, firm snow slope are a hazard, and that is the failure mode worth understanding before anything else.
The failure mode that hurts people. Microspikes give confidence long before they give security. On a hard snow slope they feel grippy while you are moving steadily upward, because your weight is still pressing straight down through the points. What they cannot do is hold an edge — there is no rigid platform to stand on and no front point to kick with, so once the surface steepens or firms up, the spikes skate rather than key in. The device does not warn you. It works, and works, and then it does not, usually at the point where a slip runs somewhere bad. If you are on terrain where an uncontrolled slide matters, you needed crampons and an ice axe before you started up.

Slope angle is the first question
Angle is the cleanest single test. Rolling winter trails, icy fire roads, frozen boardwalks and packed boot-pack up a forested hill are microspike terrain — call it anything below roughly 25 degrees, where the slope is something you walk up rather than climb.
Past about 30 degrees on snow, walking technique changes. You start edging, or kicking, or front-pointing, and every one of those requires a rigid platform under your foot and steel that projects where the foot meets the slope. A flexible sole with chain underneath cannot supply either. There is a genuine grey band between 25 and 30 degrees where soft conditions make microspikes fine and firm conditions make them wrong — which brings us to the second question. Snow hardness is the second question
The same 30-degree slope can be three different problems in one day. Soft afternoon snow takes a boot print without any traction device at all. Morning refreeze on that identical slope is a surface you cannot kick into with a hiking boot, and 10 mm spikes barely scratch. Névé and water ice are crampon-only, at any angle where you could slide.
The practical test at the bottom of a slope: press a boot edge into the surface. If it takes a clean step without much force, microspikes will do. If it skates, or you have to stamp hard for a shallow dent, you are looking at crampon snow — and if you do not have crampons with you, that is a turn-around, not a challenge.
Runout is what actually decides it
Angle and hardness tell you how likely a slip is. Runout tells you what it costs. A 30-degree slope of firm snow ending in a flat meadow is a bruise. The same slope ending in rocks, trees, a stream or a cliff band is a different decision entirely, and it should push you toward crampons well before the angle does.
This is why the honest answer is not "carry whatever suits your fitness". Look at where a slide would take you. If the answer is anywhere you would not choose to arrive at speed, you need crampons, an ice axe, and the practised ability to self-arrest with it. The boot problem nobody mentions
Microspikes fit anything. Crampons do not. A crampon needs a boot with a stiff enough shank to stay flat under the frame — if the sole flexes, the crampon levers off or the frame fatigues, and a crampon that comes off mid-slope is worse than no crampon at all.
Most soft winter hiking boots and all trail runners are unrated and will not take crampons safely. Strap-on C1 crampons need a B1 boot with a genuinely stiff sole; semi-automatic C2 models need a B2 boot with a heel welt; automatic C3 models need a B3. Check yours against the boot compatibility guide before you buy any crampon, because the boot is usually the larger purchase and it constrains the choice.
The verdict
Buy microspikes if:
- Your winter is icy trails, packed snow, frozen mud and winter running.
- You hike in flexible boots or trail runners and are not changing that.
- Slopes on your routes are gentle and a slip means sitting down, not sliding.
- You want traction light enough that it lives in the pack all season.

Buy crampons if:
- Your plans include snow slopes above roughly 30 degrees, glaciers, couloirs or any ice.
- You will be on firm snow where a slip would run out badly.
- You own or will buy stiff-soled mountaineering boots.
- You are also getting an ice axe and learning to arrest with it.

If you genuinely do both — winter hiking most weekends, one alpine trip a year — own both. They cost less together than one bad day, and microspikes are so light there is no argument for leaving them behind. What you must not do is take microspikes into crampon terrain because they were what you had in the car.

FAQ
Can microspikes replace crampons on an easy glacier?
No. Glacier travel means firm snow, ice, crevasse hazard and a rope team, and it demands a mechanically attached crampon on a stiff boot. Microspikes can pull off a shoe under load, which is exactly the wrong behaviour on a rope.
Are Hillsound Trail Crampons crampons?

What about deep unconsolidated snow?
