The front points. A mountaineering crampon carries horizontal points: flat steel, wide face, oriented like a shelf. Stable flat-footing up firm névé, wrong on cold water ice, where a wide face has to displace a whole plate before it goes anywhere and shears out under load. Ice crampons turn the steel on edge into a T or I section, so a thin leading edge slices in on one kick.
Secondary-point support. Front points alone do not hold a foot still. Every crampon here carries a second row angled forward and set close behind, so the boot picks up two more contacts as it settles — that stops the heel dropping and lets the calf relax on a lock-off. A walking crampon's second row sits further back and flatter.
Frame and boot. On vertical ice a flexible platform bleeds the force of standing up into sole flex instead of into the ice, so technical crampons run rigid frames and expect a rigid boot beneath them. For a first ice season the answer is dual: more forgiving of a lazy foot, and far more stable in the soft or rotten ice you find behind curtains. Move to mono once your routes include rock, thin smears and hooked placements rather than clean kicking.
Modularity, and what it is worth
Three of these bolt their front points on, which buys one decision later instead of two purchases now: dual for the water-ice season, mono when the mixed season starts. For a climber who cannot own three pairs that is real value, and it is why the Lynx tops the page.

Bolted front points see the highest cyclic loading on the device, and the failure that actually happens is a bolt working loose — check them before every trip and after any reconfiguration, and use thread-lock. The walk-in penalty

What matters in an ice crampon
Front-point projection. Too little and the secondaries never reach the ice; too much and the leverage tires your calves and levers the point out. Around 2 cm beyond the boot is a sane starting point, adjusted after a session on real ice.
Secondary-point geometry. The specification nobody shops on and everybody feels. Points set close behind and angled forward turn a placement into a stance. Points set further back leave you balancing on the front points alone, which is exhausting on anything sustained.
Steel and serviceability. Hot-forged carbon steel holds an edge longest on rock and needs drying; stainless survives a winter of wet racking and dulls a little faster. Replaceable front points matter more than they look, because a mono tip is a consumable, and anti-balling plates should be included rather than an extra purchase.
Weight, last. The spread here is about 260 g a pair, and most of that gap is the Dart giving up dual points. Buy for front-point geometry and the boot you own, then take the lighter of two options that both work.
Boots matter more here

Two fit details matter more here than on a walking crampon. Lateral play at the toe bail, and rocking when you twist the boot by hand, both become a front point that wanders under load — seat the bail fully and set the heel lever to take real tension. Who should not buy anything on this page
Most people who arrive here. If your winter is glaciers, snow couloirs, moderate ridges and the occasional short ice step, an ice crampon is heavier, spikier and less comfortable than the job needs, and it walks badly for every hour of the approach. Anyone whose boots are not stiff and welted. A technical crampon on a boot that bends is a hazard rather than a compromise, and strap tension does not fix it. With a heel welt only, the Lynx and the semi-automatic G14 are the options; with no welts, none of this applies yet.
Gear is not competence. Nothing here makes steep ice safe. Leading water ice requires tool and screw placement, belay and V-thread knowledge, self-arrest on the snow either side of the route, and judgement about ice quality that comes only from instruction and mileage.
