Petzl Dart Review

The Dart is a specialist and makes no pretence otherwise: a fixed mono-point crampon at roughly 800 g a pair, sold with an automatic binding for B3 boots, built for steep water ice, mixed climbing and dry-tooling. There is no dual-point option and no strap-on version. You buy it because you have decided the mono-point is what you want.

What it gives you is precision. One point goes exactly where you look, into a pocket, a hooked edge or an existing hole, and it holds without the second point levering it out. What it gives up is the forgiveness of a dual front and the option to change your mind — which is the whole argument for the modular Lynx instead.

Why a mono-point, and when it is the wrong answer

A mono-point concentrates all your body weight behind one edge. On hard, brittle winter ice that means it penetrates on a lighter kick and fractures less of the surface, because there is a single entry wound instead of two adjacent ones prying at the same plate. It also lets you place into existing holes — your partner's, your own from a previous move, or a natural pocket — which on chandeliered or overhanging ice is often the difference between a comfortable stance and a battle.

On mixed ground and dry rock the case is stronger still. A mono-point drops into a millimetre-scale edge or a pin scar the way a dual point simply cannot. Torquing in a crack, standing on a foothold the size of a coin, hooking a horizontal edge — the Dart is designed around exactly these moves, and the point geometry rewards footwork that a dual crampon punishes.

The cost is stability on soft, plastic ice and on low-angle snow. Where a dual point gives you a stable base under the toe, a mono lets the foot rotate around a single axis, so you feel every lapse in ankle discipline. Newer ice climbers often read that as the crampon being twitchy; more often it is honest feedback about foot placement. It does mean the Dart makes a long snow approach or a rolling glacier plod less pleasant than a general mountaineering crampon.

Steep ice and mixed climbing are consequential terrain. A crampon does not make them safe — protection, belays, tool placements, ice assessment and instruction do. Learn on ground where a mistake is survivable, and treat the Dart as a tool for climbers who already lead ice, not a shortcut into it.

On steep ice

The Dart shines in the setting it was designed for: cold, brittle water ice at high angles. The single point sets with a controlled kick rather than a hard swing, which saves calves over a long pitch and disturbs less of the surface — a real advantage on pillars and thin curtains where a heavy dual-point kick can detach the feature you are standing on.

Behind the front point, the secondary points are aggressive and set close, so once the mono is in you are not hanging off a single edge alone; the secondaries catch and take some of the rotational load. That geometry is the reason the Dart feels planted on vertical ice despite having half the front-point count of a normal crampon.

The rigid frame matters too. On sustained vertical ice a flexible platform bleeds energy through the boot sole; the Dart's frame is stiff enough that the force of standing up goes into the ice instead of into flex. Combined with a stiff B3 boot, the whole system feels direct.

Where it stops making sense is exactly where a mountaineering crampon starts: long approaches, flat glacier travel, and moderate snow slopes walked flat-footed. It works there — it is a steel crampon with plenty of downward points — but it is fussier under the toe and the specialised front geometry is being carried for nothing.

What you give up versus the Lynx

The Lynx is Petzl's modular technical crampon: it runs mono or dual by moving the front-point hardware, adjusts front-point projection, and fits both B2 and B3 boots depending on binding version. Buying the Dart means deliberately closing all of those doors in exchange for a simpler, lighter, more focused crampon.

Put plainly: the Lynx is the better purchase for most technical climbers, because a season usually contains both brittle mixed days and fat plastic-ice days, and being able to switch is worth more than 200 g. The Dart is the better purchase for a climber whose season is dominated by mixed and dry-tooling, who already owns a mountaineering crampon for everything else, and who values the simplicity of hardware that cannot loosen because it is not adjustable. Fit, bindings and maintenance

The Dart uses the Leverlock Fil binding: a wire toe bail and a heel lever, which is the automatic (C3) system and requires a boot with both a toe welt and a heel welt. There is no semi-automatic or strap version. If your boots are B2 rather than B3, this crampon is not an option and the Lynx is where to look. Fit it carefully. On a technical crampon the fit tolerances that matter are lateral play at the toe bail and any rocking when you twist the boot by hand — both translate directly into a point that wanders under load. Check the bail seats fully into the welt and that the heel lever takes real tension without needing to be forced.

Maintenance is mostly the front point. A mono-point does all the work, dulls fastest and is the first thing to check before a trip. Restore it with a hand file, following the original bevel, in light strokes — never a bench grinder, which overheats the steel and softens it permanently. Beyond that: rinse off salt and grit, dry fully before storage, and check every screw and rivet at the start of the season, because a technical crampon has more of them than a walking crampon. Buy it as a second, specialised pair alongside a 12-point mountaineering crampon — that is how most Dart owners actually run their kit.

Who should not buy it

Anyone who wants one technical crampon for the whole season. Buy the Lynx. Modularity is worth more than 200 g when conditions swing between brittle mixed and fat ice, and the Lynx fits B2 boots as well.

Climbers new to steep ice. A dual-point crampon is more forgiving while your footwork is still developing, and forgiveness is worth a lot on lead. Move to a mono once you know why you want one.

Can I use the Dart for a general alpine route?
