Petzl Lynx Review
The Lynx exists so that one pair of crampons can cover waterfall ice, alpine ice and mixed climbing. The front points unbolt and reconfigure: dual points for plastic water ice, mono for mixed and dry-tooling, long or short projection depending on how much you want sticking out of the boot. It weighs ~1010 g a pair with 14 steel points, and it fits both B2 and B3 boots because the toe attachment is interchangeable in the box.
That versatility is the whole argument, and it is a strong one for climbers who cannot own three pairs of crampons. The price is weight, cost, and a handful of bolts that need checking.

The modularity, and whether you will use it
Four front-point configurations are possible: dual long, dual short, mono long, mono short. In practice most climbers settle into one or two and stay there, which is fine — the value is in choosing the right one once rather than in swapping constantly.
Dual, long. The default for waterfall ice. Two points spread the load, resist rotation when you stand up, and hold in the rotten sugar you find behind curtains. Long projection helps on chandeliered ice where you need to reach past the fractured surface.
Dual, short. Alpine mode. Less lever arm on the ankle over a long day, less snagging on the walk-in, still enough bite for hard névé and 60–70° ice.
Mono, long. Mixed and dry-tooling. A single point drops into small edges, pockets and old tool placements with precision two points cannot match, and it torques into cracks.
Mono, short. Steep rock-heavy mixed where you want precision without the flex of a long point.

On the ice
The front points are vertically oriented and reasonably thin, so they penetrate cold, brittle ice with a single kick and fracture less material than a horizontal point would. Behind them sit two pairs of aggressive secondary points, and these are the reason the Lynx feels stable when you commit weight on a steep pillar — they catch on the ice below the placement and stop the heel dropping, which keeps the calf from doing all the work.
The frame is stiff without being a plank. On vertical ice you want the sole to hold its shape under the front point; on the alpine ground either side of the pitch you want a little give so flat-footing does not feel like walking on stilts. The Lynx lands closer to the stiff end but stays tolerable on approaches — better than a fully rigid ice crampon, not as pleasant as the Sarken.
Steep ice is roped, protected terrain. Sharper front points do not reduce the consequences of a fall on ice — screws, belays, tool technique and honest condition assessment do. Learn those with instruction before pushing the angle.
Boots, bindings and fit
The Lynx ships with both a flexible toe cradle and a rigid front bail, so a single purchase covers B2 boots with a heel welt only and B3 boots with toe and heel welts. Two fit details matter more on an ice crampon than on a walking one. First, front-point projection: too little and you cannot get the secondary points onto the ice, too much and the leverage tires your calves and levers the point out under load. Start around 2 cm beyond the boot and adjust after a session. Second, lateral alignment — on a mono setup the point should sit under the centre of the big toe, not the middle of the boot, or your foot will roll every time you stand up.

Durability and the modular hardware question
Modular crampons have more parts, and more parts means more maintenance. The honest picture after long-term use across the category: the frames and secondary points outlast the owner's interest in them, and the failures that do happen are bolts working loose. Check the front-point bolts before every trip and after any configuration change. A thread-locking compound on the bolts is cheap insurance, and Petzl sells replacement front points, which matters because mono points wear down noticeably faster than dual — all the abrasion is concentrated on one tip.
The steel is not hot-forged, so on rocky mixed routes points dull faster than the hot-forged Grivel equivalent. The flip side is easy sharpening: a hand file follows the original bevels quickly. Anti-balling plates are included front and rear. On ice routes they matter on the walk-out more than the climb, but a plate that has cracked in the cold should be replaced rather than run — snow packing under a mono-point setup is genuinely unsettling on a traverse.

Who should buy the Lynx
Buy it if you climb ice and mixed on the same pair of boots and want one crampon that adapts rather than three that specialise. Buy it if you are moving from alpine climbing into waterfall ice and do not yet know whether you prefer mono or dual — the Lynx lets you find out without a second purchase. Buy it if your boot collection spans B2 and B3.
Who should not buy it
General mountaineers. If your season is glaciers, snow routes and ridges with occasional short ice, this is the wrong tool — heavier, more aggressive and less comfortable than you need. Start from the main crampons roundup and look at a 12-point all-rounder instead.
Committed mono-point climbers. If you already know you climb mono and always will, a fixed mono like the Dart saves roughly 200 g and removes the hardware you would otherwise be inspecting. Pay for modularity only if you will use it.

Anyone in flexible boots. An ice crampon on a boot that bends is a hazard, not a compromise. Stiff B2 or B3 boots are the entry requirement, and there is no version of the Lynx that changes that.

FAQ
Mono or dual for a first ice season?
Dual. Two points are more forgiving of imperfect footwork and more stable on soft or rotten ice. Move to mono once you are climbing mixed ground or want precision on small features.
How often do the front-point bolts loosen?
Rarely, but the consequence of missing one is high. Treat it as part of the pre-trip check alongside straps and anti-balling plates, and use thread-lock after any reconfiguration.
Can I walk long approaches in the Lynx?
Yes, in the short dual configuration. It is stiffer than a mountaineering crampon and the points snag more, so take the same care with foot placement you would in any technical crampon.
Does it fit B2 boots without buying extra parts?
Yes. The flexible toe cradle and the rigid front bail both come in the box, so B2 and B3 boots are covered by the same purchase.
