Crampon Care and Maintenance
A steel crampon that gets rinsed, dried and inspected will outlive the boots you bought it for. The same crampon thrown wet into a pack and forgotten until November comes out with pitted points, a seized linking-bar catch and straps that tear under load.
The after-trip routine is about five minutes and the pre-season inspection maybe fifteen. What follows is the order to do it in, plus the part most gear articles skip: the damage you cannot fix, and how to recognise it.
Clean them the same day you get home
Do not let crampons dry dirty. Grit and glacial silt hold moisture against the steel for days and grind into the linking-bar slot every time you adjust it.
- Rinse the whole crampon under cool running water. Warm is fine; hot is unnecessary and will not help.
- Work the linking bar back and forth two or three times under the tap so water flushes the slot and the adjustment holes.
- Scrub the points and the underside of the frame with a stiff nylon brush — an old washing-up brush is ideal. Do not use a wire brush on aluminum.
- Pop off the anti-balling plates if they come off easily and rinse behind them. That gap is where mud and salt hide.
- Shake off the water, then dry as described below.

Salt and slush do the real damage
Mountain snow is close to pure water and does very little to steel. Two other environments do most of the corrosion damage crampons ever suffer:
- Road and pavement salt. Anyone who walks a snowy commute in traction devices, or parks at a gritted trailhead and boots up on the road edge, is coating their steel in chloride. Salt keeps attacking long after the crampon looks dry.
- Coastal and maritime air. Scottish winter, Norwegian sea cliffs, Pacific Northwest volcanoes near the coast — salt-laden air alone will start surface rust within days.
Slush is worse than cold powder or clean rain because it stays in contact with metal, carries whatever was on the road, and drains into every crevice. After any salty day, rinse with fresh water for longer than feels necessary, especially around bolt heads, rivets and inside the heel lever mechanism.
The same logic applies to microspikes and ice cleats, which live in exactly the salty environments that eat steel — and their chains and small rivets have far less material to lose than a crampon frame does.
Dry them properly before they go away
Rust needs water and oxygen. Removing the water is the entire strategy.
Towel the crampon off, then leave it somewhere with moving air and low humidity for at least a full day before it goes into a bag. Airflow at room temperature beats heat every time. Do not park crampons on a radiator, in front of a fan heater or in a hot car — the plastic anti-balling plates and nylon straps do not tolerate it well.
Pay attention to the parts that hold water invisibly: the linking-bar slot, the space between the plate and the frame, and the folded webbing under a strap buckle. Set the crampon on its side rather than flat so water can escape. Nylon webbing left damp in a sealed bag goes mouldy and loses strength, so if the straps are soaked, loosen or unthread them until air reaches both faces.
Rust on carbon steel versus stainless
Most crampon frames are chrome-molybdenum or similar carbon steel, chosen because it can be hot-forged, holds an edge and takes abuse. It also rusts. A little orange bloom on a carbon-steel crampon after a wet season is normal, not a defect.
Stainless models — the Black Diamond Sabretooth among them — resist corrosion far better but are not immune. Stainless still stains and pits in chloride environments, particularly in crevices where oxygen cannot reach the surface to keep the passive layer intact. Stainless buys you tolerance for neglect, not permission for it.
Aluminum does not rust, but it corrodes: white powdery oxide, especially where alloy meets steel hardware in the presence of salt water. Aluminum crampons also lose material to abrasion far faster than steel, which matters more than corrosion does. That trade-off is covered in aluminum vs steel crampons.
For carbon steel going into long storage, wipe the metal with a rag carrying a light film of oil — 3-in-1, a dry PTFE spray or any light machine oil. A film thin enough that the crampon does not feel greasy is enough. Keep oil off the anti-balling plates, since a slippery plate is a plate that no longer sheds snow well.
Surface rust versus pitting: the distinction that matters
This is the judgement call people get wrong in both directions — panicking over cosmetic staining, or shrugging at genuine section loss.
Surface rust is cosmetic. Even orange discolouration across the whole frame is a finish problem, not a strength problem, if the metal underneath is still smooth. Test it: rub the area with a green scouring pad or fine emery cloth. If the rust lifts off and leaves grey metal at the original contour, you have lost a negligible amount of material. Clean it, dry it, oil it, carry on.
Pitting is structural. Pitting is rust that has eaten into the metal, leaving craters, rough scaling that flakes away in layers, or a visibly thinned section. Run a fingernail across it — if it catches in a depression rather than sliding over a smooth surface, that is a pit. Pits concentrate stress and become crack initiation sites, which is exactly how a frame fails without warning.
Deep pitting or flaking scale on a frame rail, a front-point base, a linking bar or around a rivet retires the crampon. There is no repair. Crampons are cheap relative to a broken ankle on a glacier, and a frame is not a component you get to be optimistic about.
Inspecting the frame, points and linking bar
Do this with clean, dry crampons in good light. Take your time and look at each area deliberately rather than glancing at the pair as a whole.
- Frame rails and bends. Look for hairline cracks at every bend and every hole. Bends and holes are where stress concentrates. A crack often shows as a fine dark line that does not wipe away, sometimes with a rust weep running out of it.
- Front points. Check the root where the point meets the frame, not just the tip. Look for cracks, and for any point that has been bent and straightened — steel that has been bent back is already damaged.
- Point length. Points shorten with sharpening and abrasion. Compare against the least-used points on the same pair. Once secondary points are stubs and front points are noticeably shorter than their original profile, the crampon has become a less capable tool.
- Linking bar. Slide it through its full range. It should move without grinding, lock positively in a hole, and show no cracks around the holes.
- Heel lever and toe bail. The lever should snap shut with firm thumb pressure and stay shut. Check the wire bail for kinks, flat spots and rust at the bends — a deformed bail will not seat in a boot welt correctly.
- Rivets. Any rivet that wobbles, weeps rust or sits in an elongated hole is a problem. An oval hole means the joint has been moving under load for a while.
Straps, plates and other replaceable parts
The good news is that most of what wears out on a crampon is designed to be replaced.
Straps. Nylon webbing degrades from UV, abrasion and repeated freeze-thaw. Replace a strap when you see fraying edges, cuts or nicks, glazed or melted-looking patches, or a buckle that slips under tension. Bring the old strap or the model name when buying — routing patterns differ between brands and even between binding versions of the same crampon.
Anti-balling plates. These are consumables. Look for cracks, torn mounting tabs, missing clips and a surface that has gone rough or chalky. A cracked plate will fall off mid-route, and a crampon balling up with snow is a genuine hazard rather than an inconvenience — the mechanism is explained in anti-balling plates explained. Bolts and screws on modular crampons. Mono/dual convertible crampons hold their front points with bolts, and those bolts loosen. Check them before every trip, not every season. Nip them up with the correct tool to snug plus a nudge — over-torquing strips threads in the frame, which is not repairable. Replace any bolt with rounded drive splines or damaged threads, keep a spare set with the pair, and use thread-lock only where the manufacturer specifies it.

Pre-season inspection checklist
Run this in autumn, before the first trip, at home rather than in a car park at dawn. Anything in the retire column means the pair comes out of service.

When to throw a crampon away
A crampon is protective equipment. It is the thing standing between you and a slide on a slope where a slide does not stop. Treating a marginal pair as a thrift decision is the wrong frame entirely.
Retire the pair immediately if any of these apply: a crack anywhere in the frame, a front point, the linking bar or the heel lever; a point that has been bent and straightened; corrosion pitting or flaking scale in any load-bearing section; a rivet that moves or a rivet hole that has gone oval; a linking-bar catch that no longer locks; a heel lever that will not stay closed on a boot it used to fit; or a crampon that has taken a hard fall onto rock from height, since damage from impact is not always visible. Do not weld, braze, heat-treat or straighten a crampon. Any of those changes the metal in ways you cannot inspect.
Wear alone can also end a pair without any drama: points filed and abraded far enough back that they no longer bite, or a frame so thinned by years of rock contact that it flexes noticeably by hand. Cut retired crampons up or file the points flat before disposal so they do not end up in a second-hand bin.

FAQ
Can I put crampons in the dishwasher?
No. The heat, the detergent and the long damp cycle are all bad for nylon straps and plastic anti-balling plates, and the crampon comes out wet in exactly the crevices you most want dry. Cool running water and a nylon brush do a better job in two minutes.
Is a bit of orange rust a reason to replace my crampons?
Almost never. Surface rust that scours off and leaves smooth grey metal has cost you a negligible amount of material. What retires a crampon is pitting — craters and flaking scale that have eaten into the section — and cracks. Clean the surface, dry it fully, and wipe on a light oil film before storage.
How often should I sharpen my points?
By feel and by inspection, not by calendar. Sharpen when the points skate on hard ice instead of biting, or when you can see rounded tips and rolled edges after a rocky approach. Use a hand file only, and read the sharpening guide first — a bench grinder overheats the steel and ruins the temper.
Are second-hand crampons safe to buy?
They can be, from a reputable brand and with a full inspection in hand before money changes hands. Run the checklist above, particularly for cracks around rivets and adjustment holes, pitting, and points that have been filed short. Walk away from anything with an unknown fall history or any sign of heat, welding or straightening.
