Black Diamond Snaggletooth Review

The Snaggletooth Pro is a mono-point crampon that has not forgotten it also has to walk. Black Diamond built it around a single central front point with an aggressive pair of secondary teeth immediately behind it, on a frame that stays flatter and friendlier underfoot than a dedicated waterfall-ice crampon. It suits the climber whose day is four hours of approach and snow slog followed by two pitches of mixed ground where precision actually matters.

If your winter is spent almost entirely on vertical water ice, buy the Cyborg instead. If it is spent almost entirely walking, buy a 12-point. The Snaggletooth lives in the middle, and it is one of the few crampons that occupies that middle honestly rather than by compromise.

Decoding the Black Diamond binding names

Black Diamond uses the same three suffixes across its whole range, and they map cleanly onto the European C-ratings. Strap is a strap-on binding (C1), for boots with no welts. Clip is semi-automatic (C2) — a strap or plastic cradle at the toe, a heel lever at the back, so you need a heel welt. On mixed ground

The mono front point is what you buy this crampon for. On rock, a single point slots into cracks, sits on flakes and stands on small edges in a way no dual-point can match, because dual points force the foot to accept whatever rotation the two contact patches dictate. The mono lets the ankle choose. On thin, hooked ice over rock — the stuff that defines alpine mixed — that freedom is the difference between a placement and a skate.

The secondary teeth are what make it more than a dry-tooling crampon. They sit close behind the front point and angle forward aggressively, so as soon as you settle your weight the boot finds a second and third contact rather than pivoting on the mono alone. On a steep névé runnel or a short ice step you get most of the platform stability of a dual-point setup with the entry precision of a mono. It is a genuinely clever geometry.

The limits show up on sustained vertical water ice. Walking and approach comfort

Technical crampons usually walk badly: rigid frames, deep under-arch points that catch, and secondary points canted so far forward that flat-footing feels like standing on marbles. The Snaggletooth is noticeably better than its class. The rear section keeps a normal 12-point-style point layout, the frame has enough torsional give to follow a boot rolling over uneven ground, and at roughly 1000 g per pair it is not a weight you resent on a long approach.

It is still a technical crampon. Frozen scree, long moraine walks and mixed rock-and-snow ridges will file the mono point down faster than you expect, because everything you kick lands on that one tip. Carrying them on the pack for the approach and only fitting them at the base of the route is not fussiness, it is how you keep the point sharp for the pitch that needs it.

Stainless steel is the other quiet advantage. Alpine mixed routes mean wet snow, thaw-freeze cycles and gear that goes back in a damp pack, and stainless shrugs off the surface rust that eventually pits chrome-moly crampons left wet. It does not make them maintenance-free — dry them, and check the bolts on the front section at the start of each season.

Snaggletooth vs Cyborg

These two are frequently cross-shopped and they answer different questions. The Cyborg is a modular ice crampon: it converts between mono and dual, its front points adjust for length, and its secondary points are built to hold a foot still on a vertical pillar. It is the better tool for a season of waterfall ice, and it is the one to buy if you want a single crampon to grow with you.

The Snaggletooth is lighter in feel, simpler, and better on rock and moderate mixed. It has no configuration decisions to make and nothing to lose in a bivy. If your routes are alpine — long approaches, mixed pitches, an ice step or two rather than an ice route — it is the more pleasant crampon to own.

Who should buy it

Alpine climbers with a B3 boot who want mono-point precision without buying a pure ice crampon. Anyone climbing Scottish- or Chamonix-style mixed, where the ice is thin, the rock is frequent and the walk to the base is long. If you climb mostly steep water ice, the extra security of a dual-point option matters more than mono precision — go to the Cyborg. And if your winter is glacier travel, snow couloirs and moderate alpine ridges with no technical climbing, a mono-point is a liability rather than an upgrade — you want something from the mountaineering crampons category, such as the Sabretooth.

A technical crampon does not make steep ground safe. Mono-point placements demand practised footwork, and everything on this terrain assumes you are competent with an ice axe, can self-arrest, and have had instruction in movement on steep snow and ice. Can I convert the Snaggletooth to dual points?

No. The front point layout is fixed as a mono with supporting secondaries. If you want the option to switch, the Cyborg, Petzl Lynx and Grivel G14 are the modular alternatives.

Will it fit my B2 boots?

Not properly. The Pro binding needs a toe welt for the wire bail as well as a heel welt for the lever. A B2 boot only has the heel welt, which leaves the toe unsupported under a mono-point load.

How often will I need to sharpen the mono point?

More often than a dual-point crampon, because every kick lands on one tip. Expect to touch it up with a hand file after a few days of mixed climbing, and always file by hand along the original bevel — a grinder overheats the steel and destroys the temper.

Is 1000 g heavy for an alpine crampon?
