Black Diamond Cyborg Review
The Cyborg is Black Diamond's steep-ice crampon: modular front points that run mono or dual, a length adjustment on those points, and a set of secondary teeth that do more work than almost anything else in the category. It is built for the climber who spends winter on vertical water ice and wants a crampon that can be tuned rather than tolerated.
It is also a fully technical tool. It needs a B3 boot, it rewards someone willing to spend twenty minutes with an Allen key finding their setup, and it walks like what it is. Nobody should buy a Cyborg as their first crampon.

The bindings, and why B3 only
Black Diamond's suffixes are consistent across the range. Strap means strap-on (C1), for boots with no welts. Clip means semi-automatic (C2) — heel lever, toe cradle, so a heel welt is required. Pro means fully automatic (C3): wire toe bail plus heel lever, requiring welts at both ends.
The Cyborg is a Pro-binding crampon and that is not an arbitrary choice. Vertical ice loads the front of the crampon in a way nothing else does — you hang your entire body weight off two centimetres of steel, repeatedly, while the boot tries to rotate. On steep and vertical ice
Two things stand out on real pitches. The first is the secondary points. They are long, angled forward and positioned close behind the front points, so the moment you settle onto a placement the boot picks up two more contacts and stops trying to rotate. On a pillar, where the ice is convex and the natural instinct is to over-kick, this is what lets you relax your calves and stand rather than clinging. Climbers coming from a lighter alpine crampon usually notice this before they notice anything else.
The second is front-point adjustment. The points slide forward and back through their mount, which changes how much steel sits ahead of the boot. Short projection is more efficient on plastic, well-formed ice and puts less leverage on the ankle. Longer projection reaches through rotten surface layers and into the good ice below, which matters on early-season and sun-baked routes. Very few crampons let you make that call, and once you have used it, fixed-projection crampons feel like a compromise.
The mono conversion is straightforward: swap the two front points for the single centre point and re-torque. In mono the Cyborg becomes a credible mixed crampon — precise on rock, easy to pivot — though the frame is still tuned for ice and the crampon remains heavier than dedicated mixed tools. Durability, walking and living with it
Stainless is the right material for a crampon that lives in wet ropes and damp packs all winter. Water ice climbing is a soaking-wet activity and stainless does not develop the orange bloom that chrome-moly crampons get after a season of being racked wet. The trade-off, in general terms, is that stainless is a little softer than a hot-forged carbon steel point, so a Grivel G14 will typically hold its edge longer on rocky mixed ground. On pure ice the difference is academic.
The modularity carries a maintenance obligation. Anything bolted can loosen, and the front-point mounts on a modular crampon see the highest cyclic loading on the whole device. Check them before every trip, not every season, and carry the correct key. This is not a Cyborg-specific flaw — the Lynx and G14 ask for the same discipline — but it is a real difference from a one-piece crampon.
Walking is the weak point, as it is for every crampon in this class. The frame is stiff, the secondaries are aggressive, and flat-footing on a long approach is unpleasant. At roughly 1050 g per pair it is among the heavier options too. Fit them at the base of the route, not at the car.

The Lynx is the versatile one — it ships with both a flexible toe attachment and a rigid bail, so it fits a wider spread of boots and covers alpine as well as ice duty. The Grivel G14 is the durable one, with hot-forged points that survive rock better than anything else here. The Cyborg is the specialist: pick it if your climbing is steep ice, your boots are B3, and you actually want to tune the front-point projection. Who should buy it

Who should not buy it
If your boots are B2, stop here — the Cyborg has no semi-automatic path and the Lynx is the crampon that fits you. If your winter is mostly alpine mixed with long approaches, the lighter, simpler Snaggletooth is more pleasant to own and better on rock. Nothing on this page makes steep ice safe. Leading water ice requires ice-axe competence, screw placement skill, belay and V-thread knowledge, and judgement about ice quality that only comes from instruction and mileage. FAQ
Can the Cyborg fit B2 boots?
No. The Pro binding needs a toe welt for the wire bail. A B2 boot has only a heel welt, so the toe would be unsupported under exactly the loads this crampon is designed for. Choose a semi-automatic ice crampon such as the Petzl Lynx instead.
Mono or dual for waterfall ice?
Dual, for most people, most of the time. Two points spread the load in soft or plastic ice and are far more forgiving of imprecise kicking. Switch to mono when your routes involve rock, thin smears or hooking rather than kicking.
Do stainless points need sharpening less often?
They corrode less, not wear less. Expect to file the front points by hand after a handful of days, especially if you touch rock. Use a hand file along the original bevel and keep away from bench grinders — heat softens the steel permanently.
How much does front-point projection actually matter?
More than most climbers expect. A shorter projection is more stable and less tiring on good ice; a longer one reaches past rotten surface layers into solid ice underneath. Being able to change it between routes is the Cyborg's most distinctive feature.
