When Do You Need Crampons?

Nobody needs crampons because it is January. You need crampons when the surface under your boot has stopped accepting a step and the slope has started to have an opinion about where you end up. That is a conditions judgment, made at the bottom of the slope, and it changes hour by hour.

Three questions decide it, in this order: how steep is it, how hard is the surface, and what happens if you slide? Angle alone is a poor test. Hardness alone is a poor test. Together with the runout they are reliable enough to plan around.

This page informs judgment; it does not replace it. Slope angle bands, snow descriptions and decision tables are teaching tools, not permissions. Real terrain arrives mixed, changing and often hidden under fresh snow, and no traction device makes a consequential slope safe — crampons let you travel on ground you could not otherwise stand on, which is not the same as ground you could survive falling down. Get instruction, get current conditions from people who were there, and treat turning around as a normal outcome.

Question 1: slope angle

Angle sets the baseline. Treat these as approximate bands, because eyeballed angles are routinely overestimated by ten degrees or more and a slope rarely holds one angle for long.

  • Below roughly 20 degrees. Walking terrain. You place a flat foot and your weight goes straight down. If it is icy, short spikes are enough because they only have to stop a skid, not hold an edge.
  • Roughly 20 to 30 degrees. The grey band. Soft snow here is trivial; firm snow here is where people get hurt, because the surface still feels walkable right up until it does not. This is where the surface question decides everything.
  • Roughly 30 to 40 degrees. You are edging, kicking steps or front-pointing. That needs a rigid platform under the foot and steel that projects at the toe. Crampon terrain whenever the snow is firm, with an ice axe in hand rather than on the pack.
  • Above roughly 40 degrees. Technical ground. Crampons, axe, and the training and protection that go with the route. Nothing on this page substitutes for that.

Question 2: what the surface actually is

The same slope can be four different problems in a day. Learn to name what you are standing on.

  • Powder and unconsolidated snow. Nothing to grip. Points sink past their length and do nothing. If it is deep, this is a flotation problem — see snowshoes vs crampons vs microspikes.
  • Consolidated snow. Takes a clean boot print with moderate effort. Kickable, which means you can make your own steps and often need no device at all on moderate angles.
  • Névé. Old, refrozen, dense snow that takes a crampon point beautifully and a boot edge barely. Classic crampon surface, and the one that catches people out because it looks like ordinary snow.
  • Water ice and bulletproof refreeze. No kicking, no edging. Front points and a placed axe or nothing.
  • Breakable crust. A hard lid over soft snow. The worst of both — it holds long enough to commit your weight, then collapses sideways. Crampons help less than people expect here, and the real answer is often a different line or a different hour.

The field test is quick. Stamp a boot edge into the slope at the bottom. Clean step with light force means walking snow. Stamp hard for a shallow scuff means you are on crampon snow. Skate with no dent means ice, and if you are not carrying crampons that is a turn-around rather than a challenge.

Question 3: what does a slip cost here?

Angle and surface tell you how likely a slip is. The runout tells you what it buys you. A firm 30-degree slope that fans out onto a flat meadow is a bruise and a wet backside. The identical slope funnelling into boulders, trees, a moat, a frozen lake or a cliff band is a different decision, and consequence should push you toward crampons well before angle does.

Ask it plainly, out loud, at the bottom: if my feet go, where do I stop, and what do I hit on the way? Firm snow accelerates a sliding body faster than most people believe, and it takes very little distance to be moving too fast to do anything about it. If the answer to that question is anywhere you would not choose to arrive at speed, you need crampons, an axe, and the practised ability to use both. Time of day changes the answer

Spring and summer snow runs on a freeze-thaw clock. An early start puts you on a refrozen surface that demands crampons on ground you could have walked in trainers the previous afternoon. By late morning the same slope is soft enough that crampons ball up with wet snow and become a liability of their own.

Two practical consequences. First, carry for the coldest, firmest state you will meet, not the state at the trailhead — most descents happen after the surface has changed, in both directions. Second, if a slope is already soft and sloppy by mid-morning, the hazard has usually shifted away from slipping and toward wet snow instability and collapsing bridges, which crampons do nothing about.

The microspikes borderline

Most of the confusion lives in that 20-to-30-degree band on firm snow. Microspikes work well there in the sense that they stop you skidding while you walk steadily upward with your weight pressing down through the points. What they cannot do is hold an edge, because there is no rigid platform and nothing projecting at the toe to kick with. They give confidence before they give security, and they fail without warning.

The useful rule: microspikes are for ground you are walking across. Crampons are for ground you would otherwise slide down. If you find yourself turning your feet sideways to edge, or kicking to make a step, or wishing you had something in your uphill hand, you have crossed the line. Plenty of winters need both in the pack. Spikes for the approach, crampons for the last slope, and no ego about swapping early rather than late.

Things that are not evidence

A few habits worth dropping.

  • The date. October can hold hard névé at altitude; February can be bare mud at 800 metres. Conditions, not calendar.
  • Other people's footprints. A boot-pack tells you someone got up. It does not tell you when, in what surface state, with what gear, or whether they were fine.
  • The guidebook grade. Grades describe the route in typical condition, not the refrozen version of it you are looking at.
  • Having got away with it before. The same slope in different conditions is a different slope.

What to carry when you are unsure

If the forecast, the aspect and the elevation make firm snow plausible, take crampons. A pair of steel 10 or 12-points is a manageable amount of weight for the trip on which you actually need them, and there is no version of this decision where carrying them and not using them was the mistake. FAQ

Can I judge slope angle by eye?

Badly. Almost everyone overestimates, and the error grows with exposure and fatigue. Use a clinometer or a phone app, measure from the side rather than looking up the fall line, and treat any figure as a rough band rather than a number.

If I have an ice axe, do I still need crampons?

They are two halves of one system. An axe without crampons means you cannot reliably stay on your feet; crampons without an axe mean you have no way to stop once you are off them. On terrain that warrants either, carry both and know how to use them.

Do I need crampons for a well-travelled winter trail?

Usually not — packed trails at low angle are microspike ground, and a good pair of microspikes covers a whole season of that. The exception is the short firm slope at the top of an otherwise easy trail, which is where people are most often caught without the right gear.

What if conditions change while I am out?

Assume they will. Plan the descent for a different surface than the ascent, put spikes or crampons on before you need them rather than while standing on the steep bit, and accept that the honest response to a slope that has hardened beyond your gear is to go back down the way you came.
