How to Walk in Crampons
New crampon users make two mistakes. They walk as though nothing has changed, and they front-point everything the moment the ground tilts. The first snags a point on a gaiter and puts them on their face; the second burns their calves out in twenty minutes and leaves nothing in the tank for the descent.
Good crampon technique is mostly about keeping all the downward points in the snow for as long as the angle allows, and about placing feet on purpose rather than by habit. Crampon technique is learned in person, on real snow, with someone watching your feet. Reading about it is preparation, not competence. Matching technique to angle
The angles below are the conventional teaching brackets, not hard boundaries. Snow hardness, load, fatigue and exposure all shift where you should change technique, and the honest version is that you switch when the current method stops feeling secure.

Step 1: Flat-foot everything you can
Flat-footing — pied à plat — means keeping the boot sole parallel to the slope surface so every downward-facing point engages at once. On a twelve-point crampon that is ten points of contact instead of two. It is more secure, it is far less tiring, and it is the technique you should default to whenever the angle permits.
The instinct on a slope is to edge the boot, roll onto the uphill side and dig in with the boot edge. That instinct is right in a stiff boot with no crampon and wrong with a crampon on. Edging lifts half your points out of the snow. Roll the ankle instead and put the sole down flat.
Step 2: Set your stance wide enough to clear your gaiters
Walk slightly wider than your normal track — a few centimetres of extra separation is usually enough. The failure it prevents is specific: the front or inside points of one crampon hooking the gaiter, pant cuff, bootlace or frame of the other foot, which locks your legs together at exactly the moment you are mid-stride.
Tuck pant cuffs into gaiters, keep gaiter instep straps under the arch and short, and check your strap tails are still tucked from when you put the crampons on. On long days, re-check the tails at every break; they work loose.
Step 3: Place every foot deliberately
Look at the placement, then make it. Set the foot down flat in a single motion rather than scuffing it into position, and let it take your weight before the other foot moves. Scuffing is how you skate on hard névé and how you kick a point into your own shin. Step 4: Duck-walk as the angle picks up
As the slope steepens past a comfortable straight-ahead stride, turn your toes outward and keep the soles flat — the duck walk, pied en canard. Turning the feet out lets your ankles reach the flat-sole position on ground that would otherwise force you onto your toes or your edges.
It looks ungainly and it works. Most people can duck-walk directly up moderate ground until the ankle angle becomes the limiting factor — the point at which you turn sideways and start using French technique.
Step 5: Move to French technique on moderate slopes
French technique is flat-footing applied on a slope you can no longer walk straight up: you traverse across it with both soles flat, then zigzag, changing direction at the ends of each leg. The ankle does the work of keeping the sole against the snow while the body stays upright.
Change direction with a deliberate turn — plant the axe, step through so the feet briefly point in different directions, and come out of the turn already flat-footed on the new line. Turns are the moment most falls happen, because people rush them and end up edging.
French technique is uncomfortable to learn. Ankles that have never been asked to hold that angle protest, and it feels less secure than kicking the toes in. Learn it anyway, because it is the difference between arriving at the steep section with fresh calves or with nothing left.
Step 6: Keep your weight over your feet
The universal beginner error is leaning into the slope, hugging it, reaching uphill with the hands. That rotates your body weight off the points and toward the surface, which is exactly the direction that makes them skate.
Stand up. Hips over the boots, back straight, weight driving down through the soles. It feels exposed and it is what makes the points bite. On steeper ground, keeping the weight over the feet is also what stops the front points levering out when the heel drops.
Step 7: Front-point on steep ground
Front-pointing — the German technique, pied devant — is for ground too steep to flat-foot. Kick the front points into the snow or ice horizontally, in one committed swing rather than several taps, and then drop your heel slightly so the secondary points under the ball of the foot settle in as well. Those secondary points carry much of the load; a raised heel leaves you standing on two spikes and a straining calf.
Step up on the front of the foot with the leg straight where possible, so the skeleton takes the weight rather than the calf. Two solid placements beat five tentative ones — over-kicking shatters brittle ice and wastes energy you will want higher up.

Step 8: Mix and rest with combination technique
Between the flat-foot angles and the front-point angles sits a large band of terrain best travelled with one foot doing each. The uphill or inside foot stays flat with all points engaged; the other front-points. This is often taught as the American technique or pied troisième, and it lets you alternate which muscle group is loaded.
Use the same idea to rest. On steep ground, pied assis — turning to face out or sideways, dropping into a crouched, flat-footed stance with the knees bent — takes the load off screaming calves without needing to descend. Taking twenty seconds to do that repeatedly is far cheaper than pushing until the calves cramp.
The fatigue calculus is the whole argument for learning French technique. Front-pointing is easy to learn and expensive to sustain; flat-footing is awkward to learn and nearly free. Anyone who front-points every slope will be slower, more tired and less safe on the descent — which is where most winter accidents happen.
Step 9: Carry the axe uphill and manage transitions
The axe lives in the uphill hand, held in cane position with the pick pointing backward or forward according to how you were taught, ready to be driven in. At every zigzag turn you swap hands — plant the axe, complete the turn, take it in the new uphill hand. Never make the turn with the axe in the downhill hand as an afterthought.
Transitions between techniques deserve the same care. Change technique on stable footing at a natural break in the angle, not halfway through a move. The same applies to descending: go down flat-footed with the knees bent and the weight over the feet, facing out while you safely can, and turn to face in and reverse front-point before the angle forces the decision.
Two conditions demand extra attention. Wet spring snow balls up underfoot and quietly removes your points — knock the frame with the axe shaft on every few steps, and carry anti-balling plates. Why do my calves burn so quickly in crampons?
Almost always too much front-pointing on ground that could be flat-footed, or front-pointing with the heel held high so the secondary points never engage. Drop the heel, straighten the leg, and switch to flat-footing or a combination step at the first opportunity.
Can I use trekking poles instead of an ice axe?
Poles help balance on low-angle ground and can be used alongside an axe. They cannot arrest a slide. On any slope where a fall would accelerate, the axe is the required tool and you need to have practised arresting with it.
How do I stop catching my pants and gaiters?
Widen your stance, tuck cuffs into gaiters, shorten and secure every strap tail, and slow the tempo. Snagging is a symptom of walking at your summer pace with sharp steel on your feet.
Is descending really more dangerous than climbing?
It is where a disproportionate share of winter incidents happen. Fatigue is highest, the technique is less instinctive, and softening afternoon snow changes underfoot. Plan the descent technique before you are tired, and turn to face in earlier than feels necessary.
