Petzl Vasak Review

The Vasak is the crampon we recommend more than any other, and the reason is unglamorous: it does nothing badly. Twelve steel points in a conservative layout, ~880 g a pair, horizontal front points that kick a supportive step instead of skating, and a binding version for almost every stiff boot on the market. It is the default answer for glacier travel, snow couloirs, alpine ridges and the occasional short ice step.

It is not the crampon for someone who mostly climbs vertical waterfall ice, and it is far more crampon than an icy trail needs. Inside that broad middle — the terrain most people in boots actually travel — nothing else covers as much ground with as few compromises.

On snow and glacier: the job it was built for

Most of a mountaineering day is spent flat-footing across ground between 20° and 45°, and that is where crampon geometry either helps you or quietly fights you. The Vasak's ten downward points sit under the ball, arch and heel in a wide, even pattern, so weight lands on multiple points at once rather than teetering on two. On firm névé you feel the whole sole engage. On breakable crust you get enough penetration to stop the foot sliding before the crust collapses.

The front points angle forward and slightly down rather than jutting aggressively. On a steepening slope that means you can move from flat-footing to French technique to a few front-point kicks without changing your stance dramatically. It also means the points are less likely to snag a gaiter, a soft shell cuff or the rope when you are tired and getting sloppy — the failure mode that trips more people than any lack of grip.

The secondary points behind the front pair are the underrated part of the design. They are long enough to catch when you front-point on a short bulge, which keeps the ankle from having to hold the whole load, but not so long that they lift the front points out of the snow when you walk flat.

Moderate ice: capable, with a ceiling

Horizontal front points have more surface area than vertical ones, so they displace more ice per swing of the foot. On soft alpine ice or a short water-ice step, that is fine and arguably more stable — the wide point resists rotating in the placement. On brittle, cold waterfall ice it becomes work: you kick more, you fracture more dinner plates, and your calves know about it.

Our honest ceiling for the Vasak is short steps up to roughly 60°, climbed in balance rather than hung off. No crampon makes steep snow or ice safe by itself. Above about 30°, a slip becomes a slide, and stopping one requires an ice axe and practised self-arrest — plus honest judgment about what is below you. Get instruction before you rely on either.

Bindings and fit

Petzl sells the Vasak in two binding versions, and choosing correctly matters more than the model choice itself.

Flexlock is the strap-on version (C1). A plastic toe cradle and heel cradle joined by webbing, it fits stiff-soled boots that have no welts at all — which is most B1 mountaineering boots and some genuinely rigid backpacking boots. Leverlock Universel is the lever version. The heel lever needs a heel welt, and the toe ships with both a flexible strap cradle and the option to run a wire bail, so one purchase covers C2 (semi-automatic) and C3 (automatic) fitting. If your boots have a heel welt, buy this version — it is faster to put on with cold hands and it holds its adjustment better over a season.

Adjustment is tool-free. The linking bar indexes by pushing a spring clip and sliding, and Petzl offers a long bar for boots above roughly size 47. Set front-point projection so the points protrude about 1.5–2 cm beyond the toe of the boot, then check that the crampon does not rock when you twist the boot by hand.

Snow shedding, durability and long-term ownership

ANTISNOW plates come fitted, front and rear, and they are among the better ones made. Wet spring snow still balls up under any crampon eventually, but the Vasak sheds it with a tap of the axe shaft rather than needing a determined scrape. Balling is the single most common cause of unexpected slips on warm afternoons, so treat intact plates as safety equipment and replace them when they crack — Petzl sells them separately.

The steel is not hot-forged like Grivel's, and that shows up as slightly faster point wear on rocky approaches. It also means the points file easily: ten minutes with a hand file restores the bite, where hot-forged points take longer. Over years, the Vasak's frame and bar hold up well; the parts that need attention are the straps, the anti-balling plates and the front bail or cradle. Rinse salt and grit off after coastal or roadside days, dry the crampons before storing, and check the linking-bar clip and every screw at the start of a season. That is the entire maintenance routine.

Who should buy the Vasak

Buy it if you own one pair of crampons and want them to cover glacier trekking, alpine climbing to moderate difficulty, winter hillwalking on steep ground and the occasional ice step. Buy it if you are building a first mountaineering kit and want gear you will not outgrow in two seasons. Buy the Leverlock version if your boots have a heel welt, the Flexlock version if they do not.

Who should not buy it

Waterfall ice climbers. If most of your winter days are spent on vertical ice, buy a modular mono/dual crampon from the ice climbing roundup. The Vasak will climb the pitch and make you work far harder than necessary.

Trail hikers. If your winter is packed snow, frozen trail and the occasional icy traverse in flexible boots or trail shoes, a 12-point crampon is the wrong and more dangerous choice — points catch, frames flex, straps loosen. Use microspikes instead. Crampons start where the slope gets steep enough that a fall runs.

FAQ

Will the Vasak fit my hiking boots?

Only if they are genuinely stiff. Hold the boot at heel and toe and try to twist and bend it — if the sole flexes noticeably, no crampon belongs on it. Stiff B1 boots take the Flexlock version. Anything softer means microspikes.

Vasak or Sarken?

Vasak if your season is mostly snow, glacier and ridges with occasional ice. Sarken if steep alpine ice appears regularly — its T-section points bite far better for roughly 80 g more.

Do I need to buy anti-balling plates separately?

No. ANTISNOW plates are included and pre-fitted front and rear. Replacements are sold separately when the plates crack or wear through.

How long do the points stay sharp?

It depends entirely on how much rock you walk over. A season of snow and ice barely dulls them; a few rocky approaches will. A hand file restores the edge in minutes — never use a bench grinder, which overheats and softens the steel.
