The G12 is the direct descendant of the crampon that started modern mountaineering: Laurent Grivel's 1929 12-point design with forward-facing front points. Nearly a century later it is still a hot-forged steel 12-point with conservative geometry, sold in three binding versions, and still the crampon most alpine schools bolt onto students' boots.

On snow, névé and moderate ice
The G12's twelve points are laid out for balance rather than aggression. Eight downward points give a stable platform for flat-footing, two secondary points sit just behind the front pair to support the boot when you tip forward, and the two horizontal front points project far enough to kick a step in névé without turning every walking stride into a stumble hazard.
That geometry is why the G12 handles the widest range of ordinary mountain ground of any Grivel. On a 40° snow slope you can walk in balance with all downward points engaged. At 50–60° you can front-point up a short ice step and the secondaries take load as your heel drops. Above that, on sustained vertical ice, horizontal front points start to feel like standing on a shelf — they hold, but they displace more ice per kick than a vertical or T-section point and they tire your calves faster. That boundary is where you move to the G14.
The front points are not adjustable for projection. What you get is what you climb with, which is one of the few genuine functional gaps against more modular rivals. In practice, the fixed projection is well-judged for mountaineering; it only matters if you are trying to tune the crampon for hard ice.
Bindings: New-Classic, New-Matic and Cramp-O-Matic
All three versions share the same forged frame; only the attachment differs.
New-Classic is the strap-on (C1). Plastic toe and heel cradles joined by webbing, fitting any stiff-soled boot with or without welts. Slowest to fit with cold hands, but the most universal — one pair can serve several boots.
New-Matic is the semi-automatic (C2): plastic toe basket, steel heel lever. It needs a heel welt. This is the version to buy if your boots have one, and the version we recommend to most first-time buyers. It goes on in seconds with gloves on and does not creep loose over a long day.
Cramp-O-Matic is the fully automatic (C3): wire toe bail and heel lever, needing both a toe and heel welt. The most secure and the fastest, restricted to B3 boots.
If you are unsure which category your boots fall into, work through binding types explained before ordering. Getting this wrong is the single most common crampon purchasing mistake, and a semi-auto heel lever on a welt-less boot is genuinely dangerous.
Adjustment is tool-free: the linking bar has a spring-loaded pin and a row of holes, with the heel cradle sliding to fine-tune. A long bar is available for boots beyond roughly EU 47. The fit test — heel cradle snug, no lateral rock, crampon staying on when you shake the boot upside down before the strap goes on — is worth doing at home, not at the trailhead in the dark.
Durability and Antibott performance
Hot forging is Grivel's whole identity and the reason the G12 outlives its rivals. Forged points keep their tip density as they wear, so they blunt slowly and file back to shape rather than thinning into fragile splinters. Rental fleets full of decade-old G12s are common; the frames simply do not fail in normal use. What wears out are consumables — straps, Antibott plates, occasionally a bent linking bar — all of which are cheap and available worldwide, which matters more than it sounds when you are in a valley town before a route.
The Antibott plates are spring-loaded plastic panels that flex with each step and pop the packed snow off. They work, though in warm, saturated spring snow they clear a little less cleanly than Petzl's ANTISNOW system. Balling under a crampon is a leading cause of slips on spring routes, so keep the plates fitted, tap your points with the axe shaft when you feel the boot rise, and replace cracked plates before the season rather than during it.
The one maintenance obligation is rust. Carbon steel corrodes; dry the crampons at home rather than leaving them in a wet pack, and surface rust never gets structural.
