What matters in a walking cleat

Spike length is a cost, not just a benefit. On a trail, longer spikes buy security. On a pavement route that alternates ice and bare concrete every twenty metres, they buy instability, noise and wear. Match the protrusion to the worst surface you regularly cross, not to the worst surface you can imagine.

On and off with cold hands. This is the spec nobody publishes and everybody feels. A device that needs two hands, a seat and five minutes gets left in a drawer. Look for a heel tab you can hook a finger under, a harness that stays soft below freezing, and no separate straps to thread.
