Grip: friction has a ceiling, penetration does not
On a flat, shovelled sidewalk with a film of refrozen melt, Yaktrax are genuinely effective. The coils distribute across the sole, bite the micro-texture of the ice and stop the sliding-foot feeling that puts people on their backs in parking lots.
