What matters for winter running

Weight, but not first. The spread across this page is roughly 80 g a pair — real over a long run, but small next to the cost of a device that rotates or that you take off. Buy for the ground, then take the lighter of two options that both work.

Harness security over a running shoe. This is the specification that separates running use from hiking use. A trail runner has a soft, smooth upper and a flexible midsole, so an elastomer harness has less to grip and more movement to resist. Size taut — for running shoes, go down rather than up if you are between sizes — and check the fit by grabbing the toe of the device and pulling forward. If it slides on the shoe by hand, it will slide at pace. An over-strap, as on the Nortec, removes the problem outright.

Feel underfoot on mixed ground. Almost no winter run is uniform. The realistic question is not "does this grip on ice" but "can I run the pavement, the frozen dirt and the ice in the same device without changing my stride three times". Can I run in MICROspikes?

Yes, and plenty of people do on properly iced trails. They are intrusive at pace and harsh on any bare surface, so they suit continuous ice rather than mixed loops. For mixed ground a short-tip device is more pleasant and, in practice, safer because it stays on your feet.

Do traction devices wreck running shoes?

Not the shoe itself, but the harness can abrade a soft mesh upper over time, and a device sized too large will rub as it moves. Size taut, and prefer a shoe with a defined heel counter and toe bumper for the harness to seat against.

Are screw-in shoe studs a real alternative?

Sheet-metal screws in an old pair of shoes grip well on ice and cost almost nothing, but they commit that pair of shoes, cannot be removed mid-run, and pull out of worn outsoles. They are a reasonable second pair, not a replacement for something you can put on and take off.

What about running in deep snow?
